Former EKU Co-op Manages Breeder's Cup Media
Keith Kleine, a former co-op student at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), recently had a unique opportunity to be in charge of the media photographers for the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing Meets and the Breeder’s Cup at Keeneland (Lexington, Kentucky). The Triple Crown races include the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs (Louisville), the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course (Baltimore, Maryland), and the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park (Elmont, New York).
Kleine’s timing was remarkable in that he had the opportunity to witness American Pharaoh’s stunning victories in the Triple Crown and the Breeder’s Cup World Thoroughbred Championship, thus ensuring the thoroughbred’s inclusion among the great race horses of the past two centuries. American Pharaoh (a Zayat Stables horse) was the first horse in thirty-seven years to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont Stakes - and now the Breeder’s Cup Classic – claiming racing’s first-ever “Grand Slam”.
Completion of Kleine’s co-op/internships included assignments with the Harris Arabian Horse Farm (Elkton, Nebraska) and the Northridge Thoroughbred Horse Farm (Lexington, Kentucky). Kleine also provided press releases for the Red Mile Harness Racing Track to the Lexington Herald-Leader on three separate co-op assignments.
Now the Director of Industry Relations for the American Association for Equine Practitioners (AAEP), Kleine oversees the member representation of nearly 10,000 veterinarians and veterinary students in sixty-one countries. The AAEP also covers a broad range of equine disciplines, breeds and associations.
Kleine received a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations with a minor in Agriculture. He then went on to earn a Master of Science degree in Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University.
